Like paint; Like people.
Bright or dull, this is the way of paint.
When you mix bright colors, you get a new bright color.
When you mix dull colors, you can only ever get a dull color.
When you mix a bright and a dull, the dull dilutes the brightness and turns the bright to dull.
Such too, is the way of people.
