Northern regional melee practice dates--heavy and rapier

Hello all,

The commanders meeting this weekend determined four dates for our melee
practices this coming season:

Sunday, December 15
Sunday, January 20
Sunday, February 24
Sunday, March 24

All practices will be held at Tysons-Pemitt Park on Rt. 7 just off the
Beltway in McLean, Virginia. This is the Ponte Alto practice site when
school is not in session. It is centrally located, has rest rooms in the
library, ample parking, and a decent-sized field. It also has a lot of
"civilian" traffic nearby, which makes it great for recruitment. That
civilian traffic may impose limitations on what we can do with combat
archery. We'll have to see.

For all of these practices, heavy melee practice will begin at 10:00 a.m.
SHARP and will run until noon. Rapier melee practice will begin at noon
SHARP and run until 2:00 p.m. Our goal here is for crossover fighters to
have the chance to play in both disciplines and to have a set of practices
that does not completely wipe out the entire day--practices will start and
end on time!

Some notes:

--We will be fighting constantly during the whole practice, with very brief
water breaks. We can talk about what worked and what didn't while drinking
water and after the practice is over.
--We will fight rain or shine, snow or sun, unless field conditions are
positively dangerous.
--Any "drills" will be couched in combat scenarios or will be fun, targeted
intermissions (king-killer, 3-on-3 bearpits, etc.).
--These are not going to be official SCA events. They are just spontaneous
gatherings of friends who want to hit each other with sticks. There will
be no MOLs, Trolls, or fees.
--You are responsible for your own water and food.

We also would like to encourage local groups to take a look at the event
calendar and host their own practices, whether on a weekend or at a
weeknight practice. Please check in with me to work on
coordinating/publicizing those local practices.

I'll send out detailed directions to the site as we get closer to the
practice date.

Bog, Chux, Rome, and our various other friends are more than welcome to
participate. Please cross-post this message as appropriate.

Do we know why these practice do not support archery? Is it a safety or balance thing?

Gregor had told me that it was a very public place where lots of spectaors would be around. Jos had written in one of his messages, It would be a good place for recuiting, he also wrote he was not sure about CA at this site. I am hoping it is a saftey thing. Now I feel myself, gregor, seamus and gorday maybe a couple others would be carful enough too shoot in any confined space. that being said, I have seen many a wild shot form not as experienced archers. I don't think Jos could say to another archer your not good enough to shoot at this site.

Hi all,

Our second winter Northern Regional Melee practice will be held on Sunday, January 20. Armored combat starts at 10:00 a.m. promptly and will stop by noon. Please plan on arriving no later than 9:40 to ensure you are armed in good time. Folks who have participated in these practices in the past can tell you: we do start on time. This is just a practice, so there will be no MOLs, waterbearers, etc. Rapier melee practice begins at noon and will run until 2:00 p.m.. We highly encourage crossover fighters to participate in both practices! Our friends from the Central Region, Bog, Rome, and Chux are of course encouraged to attend as well. Plan on fighting the whole two hours with only brief breaks.

Practice will run rain or shine unless field conditions are positively dangerous. Any cancellation will be posted by 8 a.m. on the day of practice.

Date/time: Sunday, January 20, 10:00 a.m. to noon (heavy); noon to 2:00 p.m. (rapier) You'll need to arrive early to be armored in time for the start of fighting.

Location/Directions: (courtesy of the good barony of Ponte Alto)
Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library, 7584 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA 22043. Practice is held behind the library. The library is on Virginia Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) between I-495 and I-66.

Take your best route to I-495. Get off at the exit for Route 7 East (Falls Church). The library is on the left about 1 mile. Park in the library lot and go down the hill to the park. Or, better, take the side road past the library parking lot, turn left and proceed about a block and park on the side of the park in the garden apartments parking lot.

You may also approach the site on I-66. Exit at Falls Church, Route 7 in the direction of Tysons Corner, pass three lights, the library entrance way is on the right. Proceed as above.
