Defending the Gate

Post by MorGrendel »

Update regarding Combat Archery.

Gentle Populace, I know the rumors are flying but please don't count us out quite yet. The Marshal in Charge for the event and I will be meeting at the site this Friday to take some measurements and see if we can make a final decision as to whether we can have combat archery safely. We are doing our best to make sure that everyone can do what they love. If you do not hear from me personally in the next week, please check our website. In Service, Genefe

Sadly, even though I will be up in Maryland for the weekend, I will be unable to participate. I had LASIK on Monday. I am not allowed to do anything for a couple weeks, and then I'm supposed to slowly get back into exercise.

Titus: Great!

Fritz: I have been thinking a lot ablit LASIK. You'll have to tell me about your experience.

So I think the count is Me, Chris, Rachel, Jason, and Gregor so far. Anyone else?

Well, I'll tell you the gory details of the surgery first. It is a two stage process. The first part sucks. With LASIK (as opposed to LASEK or PRK, the other two eye surgeries) they have to create a flap. To do this, they first suction and then flatten your eye before using a laser to cut the flap. The flattening is necessary to ensure a straight cut. While your eye is given a numbing agent, you still feel the pressure and it is fairly intense. Your vision will almost certainly black out during this portion. Fortunately, the whole step lasts no more than 1 minute per eye.

Once the flap is cut, the second stage isn't bad at all. They pull back the flap and proceed with the laser correction. All you have to do is look at a blinking light. Pulling back the flap is a little weird visually, but you will feel nothing whatsoever. You will, however, smell your own burning eyeball flesh. It's not the greatest smell in the world.

The whole thing took less than 5 minutes for me. I did only have one eye done, so double that time for both eyes.

As for results, I'm already extremely happy. The first day is a little uncomfortable, but I only needed two doses of pain killer after the surgery before I was able to stop taking it. I already see an amazing improvement. The best analogy I can think of to describe what it's like right now is a slightly dried up contact lens. My vision is a little cloudy and my eye is a little dry, but it is miles away better than it has ever been. And it's only going to get better. My vision won't be as good as it's going to get for another two weeks.

Completely and totally worth it. I officially have 20/30 vision in my right eye only a week after surgery.

I know I'm lucky I have better than perfect vision so I'm very greatfull. The idea of my eyeball being flattened just plane sucks. But I'm glad it worked out.

I broke it. It still is "usable" Broomed at the end a bit.
