So i noticed that you can get allies in your army using army builder (roster -> select allies). For ogres, i only get the option of dogs of war, but other armies get other variety of allies.
is this part of the rules? Are we actually allowed to have ally units as part of the army?
I've always wanted a halfing hot pot!! =)

They're part of the rules and they're not. There is that allies section of the rulebook, but for now there aren't any actual rules for combining armies outside of Storm of Magic. Rule has it, though, that an allies chart similar to what 40k has now is coming for 9th edition.
Dogs of War were put out in 6th edition and have not been updated since. I've never seen anything that says they're no longer usable, but they've more or less been dropped by GW.
