Duke Paul Training

Post by MorGrendel »

We should try and hit one of these. This guy is pretty cool, and can show you a lot. Particularly he focuses on how not to wear/destroy your body to peices. Fritz and Serban, I think you could learn a lot from him.

Greetings,

Duke Paul will make his annual training visit to Atlantia next week. Right now this is his schedule.

17 May- Ponte Alto Thursday Practice
18 May- Open Training at Sir Guys, Most Likely Night Training at Sir Thomas'
19 May- Windmaster Hill War Practice
20 May- Ponte Alto Sunday Practice
21 May- Open Training at Sir Guys most likey, night at College Park.

Duke Stephan will be around at the practices and nights as well..

This might change slightly but not to much. Open training means just stop by and soak up the Heavy Training Goodness.

I will have Training disks as well.

Feel free to email me for directions.

Sir Guy

I think I'll be at Thursday, Sunday and Monday, though I don't know how much training I'll get without armor...

I didn't quite understand that, but the Thursday and Sunday practice are definitely in-armor, smash mouth fighting practices. There's going to be dozens of people there this Sunday, I betcha.

If this is the same guy as last year. He works with everyone in a group and works on throwing shots and how to walk and throw and multiple weapons. I don't believe I saw him with armour on but that might just be me. He also hands out DVD's for people to use as well. I think Mor Grendel has a few of them.

In what I have seen of Duke Paul, a teeshirt and gloves is the most I've ever seen him geared up. I'm sure he does armor up, but I can't say I've ever seen him fight somebody.

Oh yea, definitely agree there. He's an old man at this point, and I think it's unlikely he'll be fighting.

All the same, his instruction helped me tighten up my technique in several really important ways. There will be dozens of other fighters, though. I can't see that many people getting together and not swinging a ton o' stick. Take it or leave it, I guess.

Sorry I was trying to imply that the workshops with Duke Paul, it is fine that you don't have armour because if you are just going to work with him you don't need it from my experince. Please bring armour to any of the three practices if you also plan to fight because the pratice isn't just going to stop because someone is there to help train. :D

Reposting what I put on the Anglesey group:

That was a good practice and worth my drive from Maryland. It was all one-on-one with Duke Paul offering suggestions to the fighters, then he and Duke Stephan instructed a group of newish people and others who listened in. They pulled our body parts into the right positions (well, the girls' anyway) which was a big help and taught us a number of things to practice on a pell. Duke Paul has been fighting for about 40 years, his manual is available here: http://www.bellatrix.org/school/

On Sunday afternoon Duke Paul is giving his lessons starting at the beginning (stance, etc.) at Ponte Alto practice in Falls Church:

Heavy Weapons Fighter Practice (Sundays Noon - Dark, Weather Permitting)
Practice is behind the Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library 7584 Leesburg Pike,
Falls Church.

Take your best route to I-495 (west side)
Get off at the exit for Route 7 East (Falls Church).
The library is on the left about 1 mile (small black sign with white
letters, building is set back from the road)
Park in the library lot on the right and go down the hill to the park.

So even without armor, yes, I got a lot out of it. But then I do have a lot to learn! I'm taking more classes at the University of Atlantia on June 2. Three to five nights a week of fighter practice just hasn't been enough!

I was mostly wrong. We had a number of folks in armor, but none of the instruction extended into practical applications. I managed to get in a few bouts before the training, then split off about half way through to do polearm work with Vlad, Corby, and Phillip. I'd say it was a good day for new fighters, but not so much for experienced ones. Y'all didn't miss much.

Thanks, we got stuck in a loooooong move. I'll spare the details, save that someone got their mouth taped shut, and we killed a bear.

I learned a lot, but I am a new fighter. They were mostly teaching sword and shield drills. I'm finally starting to feel like I know what I'm supposed to be doing!
